Baby of Devika

A parent being able to hold their newborn, gaze at its eyes, and just look at that little creature who is a part of them is something we take for granted. Devika’s eyes swelled up in tears to see her baby strapped in IV fluids, wondering how she would find the resilience to bear the pain. Today, the baby girl is four and a half months old and lives in the small town of Gundlupet. Anything and everything makes her eyes go wide and big. But none can match the twinkle in her eye when her mother picks her up and holds her close to her bosom.

Devika and Mahesh are from Gundlupet, a small village in Mysore. Mahesh is a farmer and earns Rs 3,500 per month. Their baby girl was born at 28 weeks at JSS Hospital, Mysuru. The baby had a birth weight of 1.2 kg. For the first 10 days, the baby was in the JSS Hospital NICU. On day 10, the little one was shifted to Motherhood Hospitals in Mysuru. She had a late onset of sepsis, pneumonia, low birth weight, and severe anemia. She displayed irregular breathing patterns. The doctor recommended at least a month and 17 days of NICU stays for the little one to recover.

There were multiple complications in this case, which was intimidating for the parents, who came from a small village. Devika’s eyes swelled up in tears to see her baby strapped in IV fluids, wondering how she would find the resilience to bear the pain.

Hearing about the case from Motherhood Hospitals Mysuru, the Neonates Foundation of India reached out to them to support the couple and reduce their financial burden.

The baby girl continued to be on the ventilator, and her respiratory distress kept worsening. She was administered an upgrade of medicines, and in the next 48 hours, her condition improved, and she was transferred to room air. Over a period of 22 days, the antibiotics took their time to reduce the sepsis.

Today, the baby girl is four and a half months old and lives in the small town of Gundlupet. Anything and everything makes her eyes go wide and big. But none can match the twinkle in her eye when her mother picks her up and holds her close to her bosom.
