I think that I see something deeper, more infinite, more eternal than the ocean in the expression of the eyes of a little baby when it wakes in the morning and coos or laughs because it sees the sun shining on its cradle.” —Vincent Van Gogh
Nadeem and Sadiya were just about to experience the most beautiful moment of their life, the birth of their first baby. The excited parents had made a list of baby names and friends and relatives would play a little game of looking at the bump and deciding whether it was a boy or girl.
Sadiya was dreaming about seeing her baby smile, cradling her to sleep, while Nadeem dreamt about how he would do anything to keep the baby happy and safe, forever in Baba’s arms.
However, the untimely delivery of their little angel proved to be traumatic for the new parents. Their little angel was a late preterm baby born at 34 weeks gestation and weighed 2.29 kg, about the size of a pineapple. The baby was born in Amarnath Reddy Hospital in Anantapur District. She was transferred to Happy Shine, Hospital in Hindupur, Andhra Pradesh for further treatment in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). She had belly breathing where her abdomen would pull in when she would breathe. Although a late preterm, she faced respiratory distress, infection, and a possible congenital disease. The new parents were not prepared for this distress. Nadeem, (the Father) is a street hawker who sells fruits every day to make both ends meet. Being the sole breadwinner, he was intimidated by the cost of the NICU treatment. Seeing his financial distress, Happy Shine Hospital reached out to the Neonates Foundation of India. Nadeem felt like a weight had lifted off his chest when NFI came in to provide financial aid for the newborn’s treatment.
Today Baby of Sadiya and Nadeem are forever grateful for the timely help they received from NFI and Happy Shine. Today Baby of Sadiya is ____ months old, her parents enjoying their new-found parenthood, competing over whether their daughter will learn to say Ami or Abba first.
